luscious_purple: The middle class is too big to fail! (middle class)
Yesterday the boy toy and I made cheese. We used a recipe for something called cagliata fresca from this cookbook. However, it bore much resemblance to online recipes for making ricotta at home. Whatever.

We didn't have a thermometer handy (yeah, I need to get one), so we had to watch for clues that the milk was hot but not boiling. At first the boy toy added lemon juice from the bottle he keeps handy, but we got hardly any curds. So I suggested using real lemon juiced, and he squeezed a lemon (or more, I wasn't watching) into the whey that was left and reheated it, and it curdled up just fine. On whole wheat toast, it tasted great, with a hint of lemon.

Now, of course, I so want to make more cheese. Mmm-hmm. Right before Pennsic, this is dangerous. :-)
luscious_purple: i'm in ur fizx lab, testin ur string therry (string therry)
1. Today was filled with pierogies. The boy toy and I made a couple of batches of them this afternoon ... and then we didn't eat any. We froze most of them but saved six in the fridge for tomorrow night's supper. Then we went to my church for a Russian-themed Ethnic Dinner. This wasn't the first time the committee, months ago, chose an Ethnic Dinner theme to match an Olympic host city, but they didn't exactly foresee the Ukrainian/Crimean crisis hard on the heels of the Games. Then again, the chief organizer of the whole Ethnic Dinner series is more interested in peoples and cultures than politics. Attendance was a little light this time around, but those of us who attended got a tasty and filling meal.

2. Speaking of Russia ... it has occurred to me that I should start backing up my LJ in case the Russian parent company severs ties with the US for whatever reason (or it is hit with politically motivated DDOS attacks or whatever). I've never gotten LJ Book to work, so I'm just plugging away with And that doesn't even work on friends-locked posts, so every time I come to one of those, I have to change it to public, make the PDF, and then go into "edit entry" and change it back to friends-only. Needless to say, this is slow going.

3. Welcome to all the new folks around here. It's encouraging that there are still some people on LJ.

4. I was thrilled that the UMass men's basketball team made it to the Big Dance for the first time since 1998, but less than thrilled that they were one-and-done. Then again, the first half of their season was stronger than the second half anyway.

5. I was going to write more, but the combination of the hour and the heavy meal ... I don't think I'll be awake much longer.
luscious_purple: Stop SOPA and PIPA (No SOPA)
Gee, why did all that unsalted butter disappear from my fridge? And why is my kitchen full of freshly baked cookies? I think the boy toy had something to do with it.... :-)

I am continuing to play with my tablet. I posted a "test post" to DW with the ElJay app, but it didn't get cross-posted to LJ. I shall have to practice cross-posting before next week. And if I can't cross-post, well, I'll try to make everything public and folks from one journal might temporarily have to check the other journal. I'm not going to make huge LJ/DW posts from the tablet, either. Just saying.

With my wings clipped by my balky transmission, what have I been doing? Well, I worked on a short freelance article for my ex-employer -- just got that done today. I am applying to a couple more putative job openings. We shall see.

Before Pennsic, the boy toy and I bought a nice box of Roma tomatoes at Spicknall's Farm. This was to be his project while I was at War. By now we have canned tomato sauce, whole tomatoes, tomato soup concentrate, and diced tomatoes. And we've still got a few more tomatoes. We might make more of the soup concentrate. Believe me, when we put a little milk in it and heat it up this winter, it will kick the butt of those commercial tomato soups.

Slowly I am de-junking the spare bedroom. It didn't get filled in a day, so it won't get emptied in a day, either.

The boy toy is simmering some beef for tacos, and later he'll broil up some chicken wings.

Me? I'm watching, and I know Roadskoller is cheering for her beloved Green Bay Packers, but I still feel bad that the best team in the NFL regular season -- the team with the unanimous league MVP -- isn't going to be there. (Hey, it would have been a rematch of the 1997 Super Bowl. Oh, wait, that was the year my mother died.)

At least the Puppy Bowl with the Kitty Halftime Show was adorable. *dies of cuteness*

I have finally finished updating with the details of Slavic University. Go check that out.

Also, tonight the boy toy made an excellent crock-pot roast beef flavored with salt, pepper, and rosemary. I have decreed that if we ever do get around to planting a window box of herbs, we will plant rosemary.
