These questions were written by Florianschild.

1) What is the oldest thing you own?

Good question. I have a couple of books printed in the 1890s, my grandfather's diploma from 1907, my grandmother's pre-1912 pocket watch. I suppose a tiny chip of meteorite that a couple of astronomer friends once gave me is truly the oldest thing I own.

2) What is the oldest home you've lived in?

Definitely not my childhood home -- my parents built that between their wedding and my birth. In my 20s I moved an *average* of once per year. At one point I rented a sad little one-room apartment that was an extension onto the back of a 200-year-old farmhouse. I have no idea when the addition was built, but it was in bad shape. A couple of apartments I shared in Massachusetts probably dated to the early 1900s. One of my college dorms was built in 1923 and was one of the first Sheraton hotels.

3) What is the oldest book you've read?

Maybe Plato's Republic? In terms of authorship, that is. I own a couple of small books that were printed in the 1890s.

4) What is the oldest electronic device that you still use?

Hmm ... the boy toy has done a pretty good job of purging old technology around here. Excluding purely "electrical" things like lamps and the refrigerator, my oldest working electronic gizmo is probably the Sony clock radio, which I purchased in 1994.

5) What is the oldest work of art/architecture that you've seen?

Stuff at the British Museum like the Rosetta Stone and the Egyptian mummies. Also a King Tut exhibit that once visited the Museum of Science in Boston while on tour.

To jump-start my writing here....

1. What is one of your favorite things about your country?

We still have freedom of the press and the First Amendment. Who knows how long that's going to last?

2. What is your favorite thing to do on your country's national holiday?

Eat food, watch fireworks.

3. What do you usually do for your country's national holiday?

See answer to question 2.

Oh, gee, there are so many. Regions of the U.S., as opposed to my ancestors' homelands? I love Boston baked beans, Tex-Mex, burgers, McIntosh apples, real maple syrup....

5. Who is your favorite national hero and why?

It's a tie between Benjamin Franklin and Alexander Hamilton. Brilliant writers, no slaves...

Supposedly there is a meme now going around on LJ:

Hey, I'm all for the few remaining LJ users (well, "few" comparatively speaking) finding each other.

The first time I tried to comment on the original post, it got marked as "spam," probably because I included a link to the SCA. I took it out and then the comment posted. Anyway, here are my answers the way I originally wrote them.

Intro
1.) Name (What you want to be called): Patty or Patricia (either is fine)
2.) Timezone: U.S. Eastern
3.) Languages: English
4.) Hobbies: The Society for Creative Anachronism is my great hobby, interest and passion. It's the overarching framework for a lot of my other activities. That said, I'd list my current hobbies as reading, fiber arts (especially knitting), English country dancing, and playing music (percussion and recorder) for English country dancing.
5.) Interests: Lithuanian history, heraldry, astronomy, history of science.
5 1/2.) Fandoms: I lean more to Star Trek than Star Wars. Also: Big Bang Theory, Harry Potter, and a whole lotta bands and TV series that don't exist anymore.
6.) Passions: Progressive politics, Unitarian Universalism
7.) Guilty pleasure music/song/band: Various '80s and alternative stuff
8.) Level of activity on LJ: (i.e., frequent updater, lurker, just a commenter, etc.) I post about 9 to 15 times a month, depending on mood.
9.) DNW: far-right conservatives, tea partiers, homophobic racists and sexists
10.) Words to live by: If I am not for myself, who will be? If I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?

Body
1.) Do you have faith in the next generation? Why? My friends' kids are awesome. I hope certain people in the older generation don't ruin our world before they inherit it.
2.) What makes you laugh? The humor posts on the "Single Dad Laughing" blog
3.) What exotic pet would you like to have? I don't think people should have exotic pets.
4.) What is the next planned event you're looking to in your life? A professional conference in October
5.) What was your favorite food when you were a child? Potato pancakes and sour cream
6.) What is your favorite time of day/day of the week/month of the year? Early evening/no preference/September
7.) What do you want to be when you grow up? Employed
8.) What is something you learned in the last week? Power-boat racing used to be a popular sport on the Chesapeake Bay.
9.) If you could be any fictional character, who would you choose? Hermione Granger
10.) Who/what is your spirit animal? Don't really have one.

Questions from http://thefridayfive.livejournal.com/125279.html:

1.What is one of your diehard traditions for Christmas Eve?
My Christmas Eves have changed over the years. When I was young I spent them at home with my parents and we left milk and cookies out for my Dad (oops, I meant "Santa"). After he died, my mother and I baked cookies and exchanged gifts. Now I go for dinner and a gift swap at one of my cousins' houses.

2.How do you start your Christmas Day?
When I was young, I could ooh and aah over the presents under the tree, but my father believed that we should celebrate Jesus' birthday first. So I could empty out my stocking at breakfast, but the rest of the presents had to wait until we came back from morning Mass. Nowadays, I'll be staying at my cousin Steve's home, so I will have breakfast with the family and try not to feel like a total outsider.

3.Is there one gift in particular that you’d like to find under your tree?
A job offer. Or a pile of cash.

4.If you don’t celebrate Christmas, is there a holiday you do celebrate at this time?
Not applicable. (But I do respect other religious traditions.)

5.Do you have plans for New Year’s Eve yet?
Staying home with the boy toy. I don't like to be out on the road for New Year's Eve -- I once worked with a guy whose fiancee had been killed by a drunk driver on NYE in the mid-1970s.

This week I felt like posting a "word of the day" every day on Facebook. No other explanation, just to see what would happen.

Here are the four words for this week (so far):
chatoyancy
acicular
megalopteran
cladistics

Yes, they are ALL actual words! And people have been responding to them...

"oooohhhhh !! I know, I know, I know, ooooooo,,, oooooo, ooooooo."
"Oooh, new one on me! Thanks!"
"Sounds a lot like a 'word' my 6-year-old often uses: 'actular.'"
"U made me look it up - Good Word! Useful in the mundane world and the world of the SCA."
"ooooh, ooh, ooh, oooh......................me, me, me...........call on me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
"Interesting concept. Might work in making families of fiction as well"

Hey, might as well have fun stretching everyone's vocabulary a bit, and salute the things I've been picking up at the Very Prestigious Institution.

Can't say that this is 100 percent true ... I'm not THAT much of a "Type A," am I?

You Are Charming and Eloquent

You are influential and persuasive. You tend to have a lot of power over people.

Generally, you use your powers for good. You excel at solving other people's problems.

Occasionally, you do get a little selfish and persuade people to do things that are only in your interest.

You are usually the best at everything ... you strive for perfection.

You are confident, authoritative, and aggressive.

You have the classic "Type A" personality.

You are a seeker. You often find yourself restless - and you have a lot of questions about life.

You tend to travel often, to fairly random locations. You're most comfortable when you're far away from home.

You are quite passionate and easily tempted. Your impulses sometimes get you into trouble.

You are wild, crazy, and a huge rebel. You're always up to something.

You have a ton of energy, and most people can't handle you. You're very intense.

You definitely are a handful, and you're likely to get in trouble. But your kind of trouble is a lot of fun.

You tend to be pretty tightly wound. It's easy to get you excited... which can be a good or bad thing.

You have a lot of enthusiasm, but it fades rather quickly. You don't stick with any one thing for very long.

You have the drive to accomplish a lot in a short amount of time. Your biggest problem is making sure you finish the projects you start.

You are very open. You communicate well, and you connect with other people easily.

You are a naturally creative person. Ideas just flow from your mind.

A true chameleon, you are many things at different points in your life. You are very adaptable.

You've Changed 8% in 10 Years

You've hardly changed in ten years, from your lifestyle to those (now) very retro clothes.

And unless you were really ahead of your time, you probably need to acquaint yourself with the modern world!
