Once upon a time, in one of the suburbs of Washington, D.C., a European-American man named Ed wanted to go to the March for Jobs and Freedom. But he was concerned that if he attended, he would lose his job with a conservative defense contractor. It was difficult enough that he was a married man with kids, but silently feeling attracted to men.

Many years went by. Ed and his wife got divorced. He joined a UU congregation in Maryland and got involved with social-justice issues. Then he met a guy named Al, who was also divorced and recently retired from the CIA (yes! The spy agency!). Sparks flew.

Ed and Al became a happy, devoted couple. The son of one of them married the daughter of the other. But Ed and Al could not get married themselves, only live together.

Finally Ed and Al had a commitment ceremony and considered themselves married. They moved to a gay-friendly retirement community in Florida. After a lot of hard work by Maryland activists, marriage equality became the law of that state. But it remained banned in Florida.

Today, marriage equality is the law of the land. Fortunately, Ed and Al are both still here to witness this historic day. I don't think their kids are still married, though....
