luscious_purple: Star Wars Against Hate (Star Wars Against Hate)
Hard to believe it's July 20 again. It's the 51st anniversary of the Apollo 11 moonwalk. Last year on this date I drove to far northern Delaware for the 60th birthday party of one of my high school classmates. The temperature was dangerously hot then, and we're in another "heat dome" this week. Ugh.

Now we're moving into October plague cancellations, from Capclave (gone virtual, actually) to the Marine Corps Marathon (canceled outright). Still wondering when the Maryland Renaissance Festival is going to pull the plug, although rumor has it that August 3 is the festival's go/no-go decision date.

To be honest, I haven't attended Capclave since 2004 -- often it conflicts with other events, either SCA or church-related, and I don't find the programming topics enticing. The last time I went, I felt as if I was paying $60 for some stale potato chips in the "con suite," which wasn't a suite, just another windowless conference room.

The SCA keeps on keeping on, with "virtual activities" -- see https://virtual.atlantia.sca.org. This past weekend we had another "Revenge of the Stitch" non-competition, with folks gently encouraging each other to get some sewing and weaving projects done. I made good progress on the sleeves for my German dress, although I didn't finish them. I have a hankering to try my hand at weaving again, but I still have those sleeves to finish, and I'm knitting a mundane cowl for the boy toy (for winter wear).

Still trying to keep my Facebook page Trump-free. REALLY tempted to brush up on histories of demagogues and dictators and how they came to power.

Today's major accomplishment was switching out the Verizon FiOS Internet router to a newer model. The previous one would occasionally drop the wireless signal -- sometimes multiple times a day, sometimes not at all during the day. Here's hoping that the new one lasts for another couple of years.

While searching iTunes for steampunk-related podcasts, the boy toy found a podcast called Brass Needles that is about the combination of SF, knitting, and steampunk. He pointed it out to me and I subscribed in my iTunes account. I don't think I'm going to download all past 185 episodes, but I'll check out a couple of the recent ones.

That reminds me ... I need to get another fiber project going in my life. :-)
luscious_purple: Julia, the Maine Coon Cat (Julia)
The people who gave me Pumpkin in 2008 also gave me his fake-leopard-fur cat bed. They swore that he loved that bed. However, once he got into this house, he never sat in the thing. Eventually Julia came here, and she just took over that bed. She loves to curl up in it, especially now that it's in the bay window.

Well, today I happened to walk by the window, and whom did I spy ensconced in the cat bed? Pumpkin! (Julia was off exploring the spare bedroom, where I was doing some excavating.)

I don't think Julia noticed that her bed was occupied ... but if Pumpkin keeps doing that ... the fur is going to FLY!

In other news ... still having off-and-on dental pain. Hope I can go to the dentist next week. Tonight I am taking a look at Ravelry while the boy toy watches the USC football game on ESPN (so far, it doesn't look too good for the Trojans). I seem to look at Ravelry only every couple of months. I'd like to start on another small knitting project, but I haven't finalized any plans yet. In the meantime, I'll work on a kumihimo medallion cord for the Kingdom.

1. It has not escaped my notice that the funeral Mass for 9-year-old Tucson shooting victim Christina Green fell on the 14th anniversary of my mother's funeral Mass. Of course, my Mom did not live to see Sept. 11, 2001. Christina's entire life came after hers.

2. After a hiatus between June and December, I started to update my LibraryThing again. Today I passed the 300-book mark, and I'm nowhere near finished. Have a look if you wish.

3. I know there's a Bardic Night in the barony tonight, not far from where I live, but I don't feel like going out tonight. Maybe it's the cold, maybe it's the lack of money for gasoline. I am really, really hoping that the check comes tomorrow. On Saturday, at the latest.

4. I'm still working on the boy toy's fingerless mitts. I'm almost halfway done the second mitt. I should really post a photo when I get a chance.

5. Note to all who are going to Arisia this weekend: Travel safely!
